Introductions must always come first. My name is Shelby and I'm lucky enough to be writing CityGal Magazine's blog on social media. They call me "Social Media Gal." I like the title; but make no mistake: I'm not an expert. I'm a user, just like you.

However, through my professional and personal experiences, I do have some knowledge to share about social media and how it can be used to further your career and help your business. In fact, I just started a new career path recently and I give Twitter and the people I met through this social network full credit for making it happen.

The four social networks that I am most knowledgeable about are Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare. I plan on covering all of them in this blog and discussing how you can use them to their full benefit.

I've spent more than 17 years designing, writing and editing in the print industry. While my career has taken me down a slightly different road, my goal remains the same. I am in the business of sharing valuable information. That's my intention with this blog as well.

Social media is most effective when you keep in mind the keyword "social." You have to be engaging and willing to interact with your partners, friends, clients and potential customers to be successful in social media. Think of it as another form of customer service.

With that in mind, I'm going to need help with this blog. I need your input and your opinions. I want to talk about what you want to talk about. Feel free to comment or talk to me on Twitter (@ShelMKE) if you have a topic you'd like to see covered.

I want this blog to be an interactive forum on social media and not just me having a one-sided conversation. This blog is for the readers, not me. It's about social media, so let's get social.

I look forward to hearing from you and about your ideas.
