When Big Issues Happen to Little Girls, a book written by Erin A. Munroe LMHC, is a guide for parents to help understand and assist their daughters with the challenges they may face as they come of age. Issues such as bullying, sexuality, drugs and alcohol, death, mental illness and money are a few of the topics she addresses in this book.
Throughout the book Monroe encourages communication between parent and child and provides clear strategies and talking points at the end of each chapter. She stresses the importance of the parental role and the need for parents to understand their own behavior when dealing with their daughters. She emphasizes the importance of listening without jumping to conclusions and encourages parents to pay attention not only to their daughter’s feelings but also to the quality of their own words when they respond.
Overall, I found this book to be a good resource for parents to help their daughters navigate through childhood and adolescence. Monroe touches each issue thoroughly and her writing is organized and clear. Her advice is thoughtful and wise without negating the importance of allowing a child to face and discover the world on her own.
This book does not need to be read front to back or cover to cover, it is more of a reference book for parents to use on an as need basis. In this ever changing and busy world, it is good to be reminded of the importance of a parent’s role in helping to guide their young ones through these big issues.
If you have a daughter you may want to consider adding this to your bookshelf, as I have.
